History of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Newcastle) is a city in Tyne and Wear, in the North East of England, and situated on the north bank of the River Tyne, across the river from Gateshead.

Since its foundation as a Roman city and the building castle by the eldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert.

As the region became important in the coal trade, the port began to be developed from the 16th century alongside shipyards further down the river.

Until recently, Newcastle was an important shipbuilding and ship repair centre. More recently, the city is an up-and-coming business and cultural centre of the North East, with a particular reputation for its wild nightlife of bars and night clubs.

The home of the Geordies

Newcastle is the home of the legendary 'Geordie'.
